  11.  For  a  description of the screen saver  read  the  section
  12. titled "Overview" on the next page.

  14.  The  file you are reading is displayed automatically during
  15. the  installation process.  It can also be viewed at a later
  16. time.   This file, read_me.txt, and other documentation  are
  17. found  in  the  directory/folder that the screen  saver  was
  18. installed  into.   The  default  installation  directory  is
  19. "Program Files\Via Nova\3D Objects Screen Saver I", although
  20. this  could  have  been changed by the person  who  did  the
  21. installation.   The  section  below  titled  "Documentation"
  22. describes how to get to the "Help" file.

  25. may  have  an  older version, our Web site  has  the  LATEST
  26. VERSION  of  this screen saver and contact information.   If
  27. the  screen saver does not install or run correctly on  your

  29. 800-931-2111.   The screen saver produces several  different
  30. screens.   You  can configure each screen for  color  of  3D
  31. objects, background color, movement type, speed of momement,
  32. delays  between drawings, the characters in  the  text  that
  33. appears, size of 3D objects, lighting, fog effects, and many
  34. other  characteristics.  The speed with which  objects  move
  35. can  be made faster or slower by modifying delay values, the
  36. size  of the object, or the amount it moves each time it  is
  37. drawn.   You  can disable the displaying of any  screen  you
  38. don't  want  to see, or show multiple screens in  succession
  39. when  the screen saver is activated.  The default is to show
  40. multiple  screens each time the screen saver  is  activated.
  41. You  can  change this to show only 1 screen if  you  desire.
  42. When  multiple  screens are being shown, you  configure  how
  43. long  each  screen  is  shown.  When  the  screen  saver  is
  44. activated  it will display the Via Nova building for  a  few
  45. seconds before displaying the different screens.  The number
  46. of seconds the Via Nova building is displayed can be varied,
  47. or it can be elimated.  The price (quanity 1) is $23 = $20 +
  48. $3  handling.  This program will generate an order form  for
  49. you, YOU MUST READ THE Help FILE UNDER Registration WHEN YOU
  50. WANT  TO  REGISTER.  No matter how you pay, using COMPUSERVE
  51. or  any other means, YOU MUST STILL SEND IN THE ORDER  FORM.
  52. It  contains  a  computer ID that we use  to  generate  your
  53. password.  Our contact information is in the "Help" file and
  54. in the "About" box of the application.  You only have to use
  55. "Control  Panel" to select the screen saver and specify  the
  56. timeout period.  When you want to do anything else, such  as
  57. configure  the  screen  saver,  execute  the  screen   saver
  58. manually,  generate the order form, or look at  the  "About"
  59. box USE THE FOLLOWING PRODECURE:

  78. OVERVIEW
  79.

  81. Cool  3D  screen  saver pack draws 68 different  screens  in
  82. succession.  Draws predefined true 3D objects which  can  be
  83. animated   according   to   user   configuration.    Several
  84. predefined  objects include colorful 3D:  text,  spacecraft,
  85. teapot, geometric objects, and building.  Configuration also
  86. includes  options  for  color choice  and  smooth  vs.  flat
  87. shading, light position, and others.  Can be used as  stand-
  88. alone  application to experiment with configurations, or  to
  89. run demonstrations, or to display 3D text.  In this mode you
  90. can  create images using the predefined 3D objects and  then
  91. watch  them be animated.  This screen saver was designed  to
  92. provide  animation on a computer in the  speed  range  of  a
  93. 33MHz  486,  especially  awesome on faster  machines.   Uses
  94. Microsoft's  version of OpenGL, a high  quality  3D  drawing
  95. package.   For  Microsoft Windows 95 and Intel  versions  of
  96. Windows   NT  3.51  or  better.   This  screen  saver   will
  97. automatically  use  any  OpenGL graphics  accelerator  board
  98. which  is  available  on  the  system.   Easy  install   and

  109. partial  functionality.  A 3D object will  be  drawn  a  few
  110. times and then a registration reminder will be displayed.  A
  111. password supplied by Via Nova will allow full functionality.
  112. The "Help" file describes the registration process.

  114. REQUIREMENTS
  115.  
  116.  Requires  Windows  NT 3.51 or later,  or  Windows  95.   If
  117. OpenGL  is  not present this package will install OpenGL  on
  118. your  Windows  95  system.   The  screen  saver  requires  1
  119. megabyte of disk space once installed.  The install  program
  120. will also require some disk space during the installation.

  122. DOCUMENTATION TERMS
  123.  
  124.  The following terms are used in this document.
  125.  
  126. rendering --       Drawing a 3D object on a computer screen.
  127. OpenGL --          A software system supplied by Microsoft
  128. for 3D rendering.
  129. 3D graphics accelerator board -- A graphics  accelerator
  130. board specially designed to accelerate 3D graphics such as
  131. OpenGL.
  132. Help file --       A documentation file which accompanies
  133. most Windows applications.  It contains underlined text,
  134. which when clicked, displays further information.
  135. Program Manager -- The Windows NT interface for executing
  136. applications.
  137. program group --   In Windows NT, the boxes with icons found
  138. under "Program Manager".  In Windows 95, use the "Start"
  139. button to get access to the Via Nova application.
  140. dialog box --      A box which contains a title and user
  141. input such as buttons, and input fields.
  142. registration --    Paying for a software product.
  143. SETUP program --   An application that automatically
  144. installs an application on a computer.
  145. Double-click --    To rapidly click the left mouse button
  146. twice over the same object.
  147. Main --            The program group that contains many of
  148. the standard Windows applications.
  149. Control Panel --   The program group that contains many of
  150. the standard Windows applications that control operating
  151. system configuration.
  152. Desktop --         A dialog box which control the appearance
  153. of the screen.
  154. drop-down list box -- A list of choices, one of which can be
  155. selected by the user by clicking on it.  The list has a
  156. downward pointing arrow on its right side.  When this arrow
  157. is clicked by full list is displayed.
  158.  
  159. INSTALLATION
  160.  
  161.  On  Windows NT the installer must have system administrator
  162. privileges.   On  Windows 95 this isn't  necessary.   Before
  163. runing setup you should configure your system for 256 colors
  164. or  better.  At the end of the setup process a demonstration
  165. will  be run, the screen saver screens look better with  256
  166. colors,  they  will look MUCH BETTER with  65536  colors  or
  167. greater.  The downloaded file is in ZIP format, it needs  to
  168. be unZipped before installation can occur.  After unZipping,
  169. run  the SETUP.EXE application using either Program Manager,
  170. File  Manager, or the MS-DOS command prompt.  When the SETUP
  171. program   completes   a  program  group   will   have   been
  172. automatically  created.  Icons will also  be  available  for
  173. configuration,  executing  the screen  saver,  registration,
  174. uninstall  and  for reading the help file  and  this  readme
  175. file.  On Windows NT (not Windows 95), this program group is
  176. local  (Personal) to the installer's logon ID.  To  make  it
  177. available to all users (Common):
  178.  
  179. 1.  Use the File/New command under "Program Manager".
  180. 2.  Make a "Common Program Group" using the same name as the
  181.   group created by the install program.
  182. 3.  Drag the icons from the original "Personal Program
  183.   Group" to the new "Common Group".
  184. 4.  Delete the original "Personal Program Group".
  185.  
  186.  When  the SETUP program completes, if you want to save disk
  187. space,  you  can delete the Screen Saver installation  files
  188. that  were  downloaded to your hard disk.  However,  if  you
  189. wish to give a copy of this application to someone else  you
  190. should  save  all  the separate files which  came  with  the
  191. product,  or  (more easily) save just the  downloaded  file.
  192. Configuration  files  will be saved in your  home  directory
  193. (under  Windows  NT), or the top level of the  system  drive
  194. (Windows  95),  in a directory called "Via  Nova".   Do  not
  195. delete  this  directory or its contents unless you  want  to
  196. delete the entire screen saver.
  197.  
  198.  After  SETUP  completes, the screen saver must be  selected
  199. one  time as detailed below before it will become the screen
  200. saver  which  will  automatically be run  by  the  operating
  201. system.  Use the following steps to select the screen saver.
  202. You  may find it easier to print this document and refer  to
  203. it during installation.
  204.  
  205. SELECTING THIS SCREEN SAVER
  206.  
  207.  If using the Windows 95 interface:
  208.  
  209. 1.  Press the "Start" button.
  210. 2.  Press the "Settings" button.
  211. 3.  Press the  "Control Panel" button.
  212. 4.  Double-click "Display".
  213. 5.  Select the "Screen Saver" tab.
  214. 6.  Under the "Screen Saver" section of the dialog box look
  215.   for the drop-down list box labeled "Screen Saver".
  216. 7.  Find the name "Via Nova 3D Objects Screen Saver I" or
  217.   "Via Nova 3D SS I" in the list and select it by clicking
  218.   on it.
  219. 8.  The "Wait" time below the "Screen Saver" list box is the
  220.   number of minutes the computer must be idle before it
  221.   activates the screen saver.
  222. 9.  If the "Password protected" check-box is checked then
  223.   after the screen saver has been activated a password must
  224.   be entered before the computer can be used.  If you are
  225.   not using passwords on your system this option will be
  226.   greyed out.  The "Change..." button is for changing your
  227.   password.
  228. 10.  Select the OK button to exit the "Display" dialog box.
  229.   The screen saver will now be activated whenever there is
  230.   no user input for the specified number of minutes.
  231.  
  232.  Or, if using the "Program Manager" interface:
  233.  
  234. 1.  Go to the Main program group in Program Manger.
  235. 2.  Double-click Control Panel.
  236. 3.  Double-click Desktop.
  237. 4.  Under the "Screen Saver" section of the dialog box look
  238.   for the drop-down list box labeled "Name".
  239. 5.  Find the name "Via Nova 3D Objects Screen Saver I" or
  240.   "Via Nova 3D SS I" in the list and select it by clicking
  241.   on it.
  242. 6.  The "Delay" time below the "Name" list box is the number
  243.   of minutes the computer must be idle before it activates
  244.   the screen saver.
  245. 7.  If the "Password protected" check-box is checked then
  246.   after the screen saver has been activated a password must
  247.   be entered before the computer can be used.
  248. 8.  Select the OK button to exit the Desktop.  The screen
  249.   saver will now be activated whenever there is no user
  250.   input for the specified number of minutes.

  252. VIEWING THE SCREEN SAVER
  253.  
  254.  The  screen  saver has default settings which  control  how
  255. the  3D  objects are animated on the screen.  Each 3D object
  256. has  it own default settings.  Depending on the computer the
  257. screen  saver is running on, the 3D object may spin or  move
  258. more  rapidly than you want.  As an example, the  teapot  is
  259. intentionally  drawn slowly so that you  can  see  it  being
  260. constructed.   You can change this and other characteristics
  261. of a 3D object through configuration as explained later.  If
  262. you  install  the screen saver on a network server  you  may
  263. want  to  use the "Delay" option to insure that  the  screen
  264. saver  doesn't  interfere with processing  network  traffic.
  265. The  quality of the 3D objects displayed will depend on your
  266. screen  resolution and the number of colors your video  card
  267. is  configured to display.  A video card which is configured
  268. to  display  256 or more colors, will result in much  better
  269. images.   If you would like to view the results  of  the  3D
  270. object's settings:
  271.  
  272.  If using the Windows 95 interface:
  273.  
  274. 1.  Press the "Start" button.
  275. 2.  Select "Programs".
  276. 3.  Select "Via Nova".
  277. 4.  Select "Screen Saver Configure".
  278.  
  279.  Or, if using the "Program Manager" interface:
  280.  
  281. 1.  Go to the Via Nova program group in Program Manger.
  282. 2.  Double-click the "Screen Saver Configure" icon.
  283.  
  284.  With either interface, then:
  285.  
  286. 1.  Select the "Display" submenu. Select the "Demonstration"
  287.   command.  This will give of demonstration/test of all the
  288.   3D object configurations.  While a configuration is being
  289.   demonstrated, clicking "OK" or pressing Enter will stop
  290.   the demonstration.  It may take a few seconds for the 3D
  291.   object to stop being drawn and control returned to the
  292.   dialog box.
  293. 2.  Select the "File" submenu then the "Exit" command.
  294.  
  295. DOCUMENTATION

  297.  You  don't  have to modify the configuration of the  screen
  298. saver  in order to use it.  If you would like to modify  the
  299. default  settings  for  the  3D objects  you  will  have  to
  300. configure  them using dialog boxes.  A screen  saver  "Help"
  301. file  is available which describes how to do this and  gives
  302. other information, such as how to register the product.

  304.  For  full documentation, including context sensitive  help,
  305. press  the  "Help"  button found when the dialog  boxes  are
  306. displayed.  A "Help" item is also found in the program group
  307. automatically   created   by   the   installation.     Other
  308. documentation  is  found  in the directory/folder  that  the
  309. screen  saver  was installed into.  The default installation
  310. directory is "Program Files\Via Nova\3D Objects Screen Saver
  311. I",  although this could have been changed by the person who
  312. did the installation.  To read the screen saver "Help" file:
